At Complete Physio we are delighted to announce the introduction of Triamcinolone Hexacetonide, a new longer-lasting corticosteroid injection for osteoarthritis of the knee.
Triamcinolone hexacetonide has a longer half-life than traditional steroids, which means the pain relief lasts for longer. Studies have shown that significant pain relief can often continue for months longer than would typically be achieved using the traditional steroids that are injected into an osteoarthritic knee.
How is Triamcinolone Hexacetonide different?
Triamcinolone hexacetonide is very similar to normal steroids and has exactly the same mechanism of action and profile in terms of risks and side effects. However, as it has a longer half-life, meaning that it simply stays in the tissues for longer, binding more tightly to the lining of the joint and therefore exerting its anti-inflammatory action for longer.
How do I know if I need a Triamcinolone Hexacetonide injection?
Triamcinolone hexacetonide would be most suitable treatment if your current injections do not give relief for sufficiently long periods. We typically advise patients to have no more than three injections per year into the same joint when treating osteoarthritis. Therefore, there is usually a four-month gap between injections. Triamcinolone hexacetonide may be a consideration if you are finding that your pain comes back before your next injection is due.
Are there any additional risks to triamcinolone hexacetonide?
Studies have shown a higher risk of post-injection flare (pain for up to 48 hours following the injection). Typically, this occurs in around 20% of patients following a steroid injection. It may be closer to 30% with Triamcinolone hexacetonide.
Also, while still extremely rare, the risk of damage to the joint cartilage may be slightly higher with this form of steroid as it is stronger and stays in the tissues of the joint for longer.
